ICC CWC STREAMING: SL vs KEN

Sri Lanka would look to bounce back after their morale-sapping loss to Pakistan and avenge their 2003 edition defeat at the hands of Kenya when they take on the African associate nation in their ICC Cricket World Cup Group A match on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka, tipped as one of the title contenders, lost to Pakistan by 11 runs on Saturday and they would look to lift their morale with a big win against Kenya at the R Premadasa Stadium.

They have also got the boost ahead of Tuesday's match with fast bowler Lasith Malinga available for selection after sitting out of Sri Lanka's last two matches due to a sore back.

Sri Lanka can ill-afford to take their opponents lightly, though Kenya had suffered heavy defeats at the hands of New Zealand and Pakistan in their last two matches and facing internal division with differences between their coach Eldine Baptiste and senior players.

Against the Kiwis, Kenya were bowled out for 69 runs, their lowest total in ODI cricket, and then Pakistan thrashed them by 205 runs at Hambantota.

However, the last time Sri Lanka and Kenya met in a World Cup encounter was in 2003 and the Africans had stunned the 1996 champions on that occasion with an upset win in Nairobi.

Understandably, Sri Lanka coach Trevor Bayliss warned his players not to be complacent.

"The fact that we did not win our last game will stop any complacency. Our guys are consciously aware of playing good cricket and we certainly will not take them lightly," Bayliss said.

He said Malinga was able to bowl full steam at the nets on Monday and he would be available for selection.

"Lasith bent over to pick up a cricket ball about two weeks ago and strained his back a little. The physio said that the first two weeks were the most important after his injury as the most likelihood of him re-injuring was that period. He bowled in the last two practice sessions. He has bowled with a full run-up today and batted and fielded.

We have a selection meeting in the evening and will decide what to do then," Baylisss said.

Kenya, on the other hand, are facing trouble ahead of their all-important match with reports of differences between players and coach emerging.

Cricket Kenya chief Samir Inamdar on Sunday blamed differences between the players and West Indian coach Eldine Baptiste for their lacklustre performances so far.

Kenyan captain Jimmy Kamande, however, dismissed suggestions that there was disunity within the squad and promised a better performance on Tuesday.

"I also read those reports. I have not spoken to the chairman, but I can tell you that my team is very solid. When a team loses people try to find excuses. The thing is we have not performed and we want to play well," Kamande told reporters at the pre-match press conference.

"Obviously Sri Lanka are a solid side. But we have nothing to lose. They are the ones who are under pressure to perform. Having lost to Pakistan, this makes a must win game for them and we will try and put pressure on them," Kamande added.

The Teams (From):

Sri Lanka: Kumar Sangakkara (captain and wicketkeeper), Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Silva, Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath.

Cricket, West Indies vs Netherlands ICC World Cup 2011 live score video, WI 119

Cricket, West Indies vs Netherlands ICC World Cup 2011 live score video, WI 119 for the loss of one wicket. They are in very strong position right now

New Delhi: West Indies are in a very strong position after a great opening partnership between Smith and Gayle. Both scored well and rather fast and gave a dream start to their team. Netherland captain seems to have erred in asking the West Indies cricket team to bat first after winning the toss.

Smith scored a brilliant 53 runs before being out. Gayle is playing at 49 and may be preparing to explode after playing a very balanced inning.

New Zealand score after 21 overs is 119 and Bravo is giving good support to Gayle.

West Indies take on Netherlands at the ICC World Cup 2011 in a day-night matchup today. The West Indians, two-time winners of Cricket World Cup are in a miserable state now that even makes it difficult for cricket analysts to predict that they can beat Netherlands comfortably, one of weaker sides in the tournament.

It looks like that Netherlands will be a tough challenger for West Indies, the team legendary cricketer Brain Lara and many others played in the past. West Indies lost their first match in the ICC World Cup 2011 to South Africa. Netherlands, on the other hand, lost their match to England after raising huge challenges to the English players.

West Indies need to show up a tight competition today to enliven their ICC World Cup 2011 quarterfinal dreams. Otherwise, it will perish their dreams to stay in the elite group of world cricket.

“The results in the last two years don’t suggest that West Indies are a big team, but what we know and what believe in is that we are a still a big team and we have to prove that,” Ottis Gibson, former England bowling coach from West Indies said.

Gibbon had a bad experience from Dutch as English bowling coach with the team being defeated by them in the World Twenty20. “Our players have got a lot belief that they can come here and do well and prove to the world that we are still a more than capable nation,” Gibbon hoped.

# Balaji Rao (4/57) has produced his career-best bowling performance in ODIs, eclipsing the 2 for 50 against West Indies at King city on August 24, 2008.

# Balaji's figures are the second best by a Canadian bowler in the world cup, next only to the 5 for 27 by Austin Codrington's on ODI debut against Bangladesh at Durban on February 11, 2003.

# Apart from Codrington and Balaji, no other bowler has bagged four wickets for Canada in the world cup.

# Ashish Bagai has effected three dismissals in an innings three times in the world cup - one each against Bangladesh, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

# Craig Irvine (85 off 81 balls) has registered his career-best innings in the world cup/ODIs, eclipsing the 67 not out against India at Bulawayo on May 28, 2010.

# The above innings are Craig Irvine's only fifties at the world cup.

# Ervine and Taibu put on 181 for the third wicket - Zimbabwe's highest for this wicket-position in the world cup, eclipsing the 166 (unbroken) between Grant Flower and Craig Wishart against Namibia at Harare on February 10, 2003.

# The above partnership, in fact, is the highest for Zimbabwe for any wicket in the world cup.  The 181-run stand is also the highest for the third wicket for Zimbabwe in ODIs

# Khurram Chohan (2/44) has produced his best world cup performance.

# Khurram has bagged four wickets in an innings three times in ODIs with a best of 4 for 26 against Kenya at King City (NW) on August 19, 2009.

# Graeme Cremer (26 off 23 balls) has posted his second highest score in the world cup, next only to the 37 against Australia at Ahmedabad on February 21, 2011.

# Brendan Taylor has registered his first duck in the world cup - his seventh in ODIs.

# Taylor is the third batsman to be dismissed off the first ball of a match in the world cup - the first two being New Zealand's John Wright against Australia at Auckland on February 22, 1992 and Bangladesh's Hannan Sarkar against Sri Lanka at Pietermaritzburg on February 14, 2003

WC 2011: West Indies amass 330/8 against the Netherlands

New Delhi: The West Indies put up a dominating batting display to post a formidable 330 for eight against the Netherlands in their Group B match on Monday.
Sent into bat, openers Chris Gayle (80) and Devon Smith (53) laid the foundation for the score with a century stand before Kireon Pollard (60) opened up to register the highest total at the Feroze Shah Kotla ground here.

Gayle, however, remained one short of completing his 8000 runs in ODI cricket to become only the fourth West Indian cricketer to achieve the feat, but he set the tone for the massive total.

Gayle scored 80 of 110 ball, which was studded with seven fours and two sixes, and together with Smith put on a century-run opening partnership and then added another 68 runs with Darren Bravo to lay a solid platform for Pollard to explode.

Pollard, on his part, hit a quick-fire 60 off just 27 balls, which included five fours and four sixes, to set the platform for the Windies who are without a win in their last nine ODIs. Pollard also shared a 65-run fourth wicket stand with Ramnaresh Sarwan (49).

Pollard's fabulous knock was marked with hits all around the park which entertained a handful of crowd here. Of his four sixes, a huge hit over the long off brought up his half-century.

For the Netherlands, left-arm spinner Peter Seelar chipped in with three wickets for 45 runs from his allotted 10 overs.

Put into bat, the West Indies made their intentions clear from the very first ball as Smith straight away sent out strong signal to the opposition camp by hitting three boundaries in the very first over of the innings off Madassar Bukhari.

The opening pair kept the scoreboard ticking with ones and twos, besides occasional fours to maintain a healthy run-rate against an average Dutch bowling attack.

Smith, being the more dominating of the two was completely in control as he punished the Dutch bowlers for every lose delivery, racing to his half-century in just 45 balls with the help of nine fours.

On the other hand, Gayle got off to a slow start, taking 23 balls to score his first six runs before he got into the rhythm.

After the initial hiccup, he chose the last match hero Ryan ten Doeschate's first over to open up, hitting him for three fours through the cover before he hit two more in the following over to sent the Orange brigade on a leather hunt.

The Dutch bowlers looked completely off-colour as they failed to back their skipper Peter Borren's decision to field first.

Just when the Windies started to look dangerous, bringing up their 100 in 16.1 overs, Bernard Loots struck to give the Netherlands their first breakthrough by seeing off Smith for a well-made 53 off 51 balls, caught by wicketkeeper Wesley Barresi.

After Smith's departure, Gayle got into the driver's seat as Bravo joined him in the middle.

Upon completing his fifty, Gayle went in for two sixes off Tom Cooper over the long-off boundary.

Complementing his partner well, Bravo gave a good support to Gayle and also hit two sixes and a four before he lofted the ball to the long-on boundary to be caught by Alexei Kervezee off Seelar. Sarwan got a life when he survived a drop catch on 13 .

Gayle, however continued his run-riot. In fact, the West Indies were going great guns when they chose to take the batting powerplay in the 37th over and just like India and England, they also paid the price immediately by losing Gayle off Ten Doeschate's bowling.

However, Pollard did not let that hamper the team's run-rate, taking on from exactly where Gayle left.

Pollard went for a huge six off Seelar before following it up with three more hits to the boundary and another six in the next over of Bukhari.

Imitating his partner, Sarwan (49 off 42 balls) also stole a few boundaries before he got another lease of life on 41, dropped by Bukhari off Loots' bowling but it was short-lived as he threw his wicket away in the very next over.

And by the time Seelar took two wickets, of captain Darren Sammy and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, in quick succession, the damage was already done, with Pollard continuing to go for the big ones.

Devon Thomas was the eighth wicket to fall as he was adjusted lbw to Bukhari, with referral also supporting the on-field umpires' decision.

Zimbabwe vs Canada ICC World Cup 2011 live score video, Zim 79 for 2

Zimbabwe vs Canada ICC World Cup 2011 live score video, Zim 79 for 2. Ervine and T Taibu have taken their team from a very dangerous position to a position of strength

T Taibu is on a song. He is a man in a hurry to prove that his side is not as bad as other minnows and has played a great inning so far scoring 50 runs off 47 balls and taking his side’s score from seven runs for the loss of two wickets to 76 for the loss of two wickets.

Earlier Chigumbura, the Zimbawean captain won the toss and decided to bat first here in Nagpur. Canadian team was thinking of doing and upset and took two very early wickets. But after two quick wickets, Zimbabwe team has played rather well.

After 16.2 overs team Zimbabwe score was 79 after losing two wickets.

The match between Canada and Zimbabwe is an opportunity for both of them to earn some respectability in the cricket fraternity. Besides, they would be fighting to earn victory points too. That is why before the start of the game captains of both the teams have sounded confident. They want to win this match. But wishing something and doing it is different things.

It would be interesting to see how they manage the show. If we go by the way Zimbabwe played in its opening match one can say that they have the upper hand. However, the war of words has started with Elton Chigumbura saying: "It is a big game for us."

On the other hand Canada’s captain Ashish Bagai has already announced that his team is going to win the match. "We have to win this match as that puts us in the running for the next stage, the quarterfinals.

Zimbabwe and Kenya are going to be the best chance to win." The captain, who is a banker, further added: "Those were our team goals coming into the tournament." But Ashish should know that it is not going to be a cakewalk for his team as Zimbabwe has more experience of playing on a big stage.

With experience players like Heath Streak, Grant Flower and Alastair Campbell on their side, Zimbabwe has an upper hand over them. On the other hand Canada has landed at the WC with new faces. The only recognizable player they have is John Davison.

He is the oldest player of the tournament. Fans still remember his 111 against West Indies in 2003. But in this WC he has not been able to regain his form. It appears that the Zimbabweans would be banking on spinners to register their first win at the tournament.

Where: Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha, Nagpur

When: Mon Feb 28, 09.30 local, 04.00 GMT, 15.00 AEST, 17.00 NZDT

ODI Head to Head: Played: 1, Wins: Zimbabwe 1, Canada 0.

Last meeting: May 16, 2006 - Zimbabwe 8-218 (max. 50 over) def. Canada 75 all out (28.5 ov) by 143 runs.

World Cup Head to Head: Played: 0.

SELECTION TABLE:

Likely Zimbabwe team: Brendan Taylor, Charles Coventry, Tatenda Taibu (wkt), Craig Ervine, Elton Chigumbura (capt), Sean Williams, Regis Chakabva/Shingirai Masakadza, Prosper Utseya, Graeme Cremer, Ray Price, Chris Mpofu.

Zimbabwe fielded an extra batsman against Australia in the form of Regis Chakabva, but he may make way for an additional bowler, with Shingirai Masakadza the most likely to come in.

Likely Canada team: Ruvindu Gunasekera, John Davison, Zubin Surkari, Jimmy Hansra, Ashish Bagai (capt & wk), Rizwan Cheema (vice-capt), Tyson Gordon, Khurram Chohan, Harvir Baidwan, Balaji Rao, Henry Osinde.

No changes are expected from the opening defeat to Sri Lanka.

X-FACTOR:

Zimbabwe: Veteran spinner Ray Price could only manage to collect one wicket at the cost of 43 runs in Zimbabwe's 91-run defeat in their opening match again Australia.

But the left-arm orthodox spinner, who has 84 one-day international appearances and 81 wickets to his name, is likely to pose a far greater threat to the Canadian minnows.

Canada:

Vice-captain Rizwan Cheema top scored with 37 in the 201-run defeat to Sri Lanka and, alongside John Davidson and Ashish Bagai, could make the difference against Zimbabwe.

Cheema was short-listed for the Indian Premier League player auction.

SUMMARY:

Canada are likely to run Kenya close for the Group A wooden spoon, unless they can spring a surprise against Zimbabwe.

A heavy defeat in their first outing against Sri Lanka was to be expected, but they have a chance to run Zimbabwe close or even stage an upset in their second match.

Canada coach Pubudu Dassanayake has been a vocal critic of the ICC's decision to exclude the Associate nations from the next World Cup, but his side did little to further their cause against Sri Lanka.

He will be hoping for a significant improvement from opening duo Davidson and Ruvindu Gunasekera, who were out for a duck and just one respectively.

Medium-fast bowler Khurram Chohan will also be eager to put a forgettable performance against Sri Lanka behind him.

Pakistan-born Chohan went for 62 runs from his eight overs at 7.75 without picking up a wicket.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, are in an unenviable position in their match against Canada.

Few expect them to get past the likes of Sri Lanka, Australia or Pakistan and into the latter stages of the tournament.

But a loss to Canada would represent a major setback on the road to redemption after being cast out of Test cricket.

Graeme Creamer top scored with 37 batting at No.9 in the opening loss to Australia.

Zimbabwe cannot expect to threaten anyone if they are forced to rely on their biggest contribution coming from the tail.

Much more will be expected from a top order including Elton Chigumbura and Brendan Taylor in the Canada match.

Zim vs Can: Zimbabwe elect to bat against Canada

NEW DELHI: Zimbabwe skipper Elton Chigumbura won the toss and decided to bat first against Canada in the Group A World Cup league match at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) stadium in Nagpur on Monday.

Beaten comprehensively in their respective opening encounters, it would be World Cup's 'Battle of the Minnows' between the teams.

Canada made one change to the side that lost to Sri Lanka in its tournament opener with Nitish Kumar, the youngest player in the World Cup, coming in for Henry Osinde in the opener's slot.

The day game at the VCA stadium is only the second clash between the two sides in one-day cricket and their maiden battle in the World Cup.

Zimbabwe had coasted to a 143-run win in May 2006 in the neutral venue of Port of Spain by bundling out Canada for a miserly 85.

While Zimbabwe bowlers managed to restrict Australia to 262 in their first match, their batsmen couldn't soak in the pressure and were all-out for 171.

Canada, on the other hand, were no match for former world champions Sri Lanka as they were walloped by 210 runs in the newly built Hambantota stadium.

With the format being very difficult for the minnows, a victory will certainly keep these teams interested in showing stomach for fight.

On paper, Zimbabweans are a superior side with players who have a lot of ODI cricket against the big teams against their names. The likes of Chigumbura, Tatenda Taibu, Brendan Taylor, Ray Price will hope to showcase their fighting ability on the biggest stage.

Charles Coventry, Taylor and Taibu are the three batsmen on whom Zimbabwe's hopes of a big total will rest.

Zimbabwe will again rely on spinners to keep the pressure on Canada after an eye-catching show by Ray Price, Prosper Utseya and Graeme Cremer against a strong Australian batting line-up.

Canada will be hoping that they put up a decent show which will have the big bosses of International Cricket Council sit up and take notice.

With the number of teams for the 2015 World Cup being reduced to 10, it will be a last chance for the Canadians to showcase their skills at the world stage.

The cavalier John Davison, who caught everyone's imagination with a blazing century in the 2003 edition, would like to make an impression.

So would the likes of skipper Ashish Bagai, Rizwan Cheema, Harvir Baidwan, Balaji Rao - all of whom have some Indian connection.

At 40, Davison, is the oldest player in this World Cup. Baidwan, who grabbed a couple of wickets against Sri Lanka in the last match feels that a good performance may just open the doors for him to play in Ranji Trophy (if he gets a chance he will apply for dual citizenship) and Indian Premier League.

Baidwan is one of the centrally contracted players of Cricket Canada which gives him a chance to concentrate fully on his game.

Then there is leg-break bowler WD Balaji Rao who was once considered as an India prospect and even played in the Challengers Trophy. Balaji, a regular for Tamil Nadu during early 2000, will also be gearing up to give a good account of himself.

Teams:

Zimbabwe: Elton Chigumbura (captain), Brendan Taylor, Charles Coventry, Graeme Cremer, Craig Ervine, Gregory Lamb, Christopher Mpofu, Raymond Price, Tatenda Taibu, Prosper Utseya, Sean Williams.

Canada: Ashish Bagai (captain), Rizwan Cheema, Harvir Baidwan, Nitish Kumar, Jimmy Hansra, Tyson Gordon, John Davison, Ruvindu Gunasekera, Khurram Chohan, Zubin Surkari, Balaji Rao.

Umpires: Asad Rauf ( Pakistan) and Bruce Oxenford (Australia)

Third Umpire: Steve Davis (Australia)

Fourth Umpire: Billy Doctrove (West Indies)

Match Referee: Ranjan Madugalle (Sri Lanka)

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011: India v England Ends in Terrific Tie

The crowd who queued up in Bagalore for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 group match between India and England were treated to one of the finest ODI cricket matches in living memory, as England hit a single from the final ball to see this match finish with a highly entertaining tie.
India made an impressive total of 338 All Out, with 1 ball of the 50 overs remaining, in an immensely entertaining innings, which featured some stunning shots from Sachin Tendulkar, who top scored with 120 runs, which included 5 sixes, from 115 deliveries.
Tendulkar really was a sight to behold, as he effortlessly tormented the England pace attack throughout his innings, before finally edging James Anderson to Yardy.
England had already, by this time, taken the dangerous Sehwag (35) caught Prior, bowled Bresnan – who was easily the pick of the England bowlers again, producing some tight lines en route to a deserved 5-for. Bresnan would finish on figures of 5 for 48 off his 10 overs, in stark contrast to the 91 runs James Anderson went for in collecting the one wicket he took, albeit that it was the important Tendulkar he claimed.
Gambhir (51) came in when Sehwag exited, and played a good supporting role in a 134 run partnership with Tendulkar, which set the tone for the rest of the match. Gambhir fell to a beauty of a delivery from Graeme Swann, which clean bowled him.
Next up was Yuvraj Singh (58) who also played a vital role in grabbing 58 from a half century of deliveries, before he was caught by Bell from the bowling of Swann.
India were on 305 for 4 when Singh was dismissed, but the remainder of their team were removed primarily by Yorkshireman Tim Bresnan, who’s late wickets would prove vital, as would the Run Out dismissals of the final two batsmen Z Khan and Chawla.
England came in needing a monster score of 339 to win this match, but, as Tendulkar had shown, this was a pitch that, while offering a little to bowlers, was built for batting.
England’s captain, Andrew Strauss stepped up and produced a magnificent display, scoring a man of the match 158 runs from 145 deliveries that included 18 fours and 1 six. This innings will live long in the memory of all who witnessed it and, while not quite as flamboyant as that of Tendulkar, it was every bit as good to watch.
Pietersen, Strauss’s fellow opener, added a good 31 runs from 22 deliveries to the total before becoming the first wicket of the innings when he was caught and bowled by Patel, with the score on 68 for 1.
Trott (16) did not stay in long before he was sent packing LBW by Chawla to signal the arrival of Ian Bell (69) who put on a vital 170 run partnership with his captain before both were dismissed with the score on 281 in a vital spell of bowling by Z Khan. Bell was caught by Kohli, before Strauss was trapped LBW by Khan moments later.
When the same bowler had clean bowled Collingwood (1) soon after, it looked as though Khan’s quick-fire single-handed demolition job on England’s top and middle order would be enough to see India home.
Worse was to come for the English batsmen, as they lost Matt Prior (4) caught by the sub fielder from the bowling of Harbhajan Singh. the score had gone from 281 for 2 wickets to 289 for 6 wickets.
But England managed to turn things around with some vital sting in their tail coming from Yardy (13 from 10 deliveries), Bresnan (14 from 9 deliveries) and Swann (15 Not Out from 9 deliveries).
It was Swann who faced the final ball of the 50 over match, needing a run to level, or two or more for the win. Somewhat fairly, in this excellent match, which had swung this way and that, Swann got the single to end an enthralling match as a tie. Neither side, with so many highlights and great performances, deserved to lost today: neither did.
If there is a better match in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, then cricket fans will truly have been spoiled. Those who were there today, or who witnessed the match on television will long remember this game. For those who did not, the highlight reel, while tremendously long, comes highly recommended.
Simply 50 over One Day International cricket at its very best. Fantastic.

ICC Cricket World Cup : Ten Doeschate looms as main threat

If cricket was as big as international football is in the Netherlands, Ryan ten Doeschate may be remembered the same way Ryan Giggs is - a stand-out talent in a team that was always trying to punch above their weight.

ten Doeschate's hundred and 2 for 47 in the match against England are the only things people want to talk to the team about, as though the other 14 members of the squad don't exist, or if they do, they are mere minions and he is the Raja. For now, that's exactly what he is, being the current owner of the highest career batting average, 71. 21, and acts as the mascot for Dutch cricket. With him, the team must feel like anything is possible and Peter Borren said they are wary of being "too reliant" on him.

"Ryan's not going to score a hundred in every game of this World Cup, although it would be great if he did, but it's a big ask," Borren said. "We hope he does it every game, as I say, but if he doesn't we need someone to step up."

Tom Cooper came the closest to making that leap in the match against England and was part of the highest partnership of the innings - a 78-run third wicket stand with ten Doeschate. Cooper, who is from Australia, has an ODI average 63.60 and had scored three half-centuries and century in his first five ODIs. Most of his successes have come against associate opposition but having spent time on the Australian domestic circuit, his skills against players from bigger nations have been tested.

It's players like Cooper and Alex Kervezee, who like ten Doeschate was born in South Africa, that Borren was referring too when he that "the potential in our team for other guys to make big scores as well," exists. He understands that ten Doeschate will be the fulcrum around which the rest will rotate and hopes that he will fulfil the "anchor role" again.

Batting is the strength on which the Dutch are riding on, after they piled on the runs against England, may want to have the first knock against the West Indies, irrespective of conditions. "We batted first in the last game and got 290-odd and if we could do that again it wouldn't be a bad option," Borren said.

It will mean fielding under lights in Delhi, which will present a different challenge to the team than the one they faced in their first game. "In Nagpur the dew wasn't a factor, but we trained here last night and there is a bit of dew here in Delhi in the evening."

With all the focus on their own game, it may seem as though Netherlands have spared few thoughts for their opposition, West Indies. Borren discussed them on Saturday saying that his team knows the West Indies have "two or three of the most dangerous players in the world," at their disposal, and even without Dwayne Bravo they have "players who can do the job."

AIR expects to earn Rs. 8 crore ad revenue from ICC World Cup

New Delhi: All India Radio (AIR) expects to earn Rs. 7-8 crore in advertising revenue from its coverage of the ongoing Cricket World Cup, but the public service broadcaster’s news division is complaining that live commentary is eating into current affairs programming and news bulletin time.

AIR, which typically charges Rs. 300 for a 10-second ad spot during regular programming, is earning Rs. 7,000-10,000 for the same spot during matches.

“If team India performs well, the figure can escalate by 20-30%,” said an AIR official, who did not want to be named as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Cricket is India’s most popular sport, and the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup, held every four years, is its biggest tournament, pitching top teams from around the world against each other. India, along with Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, is co-hosting this year’s edition, which began on 19 February.

AIR will air 35 of the 49 matches that will be played during the World Cup, and has paid ICC around Rs. 1 crore—at $6,250 (Rs. 2.8 lakh) per match—for broadcasting rights. It has made additional investment in hiring 20-25 commentators, inviting experts and setting up commentary boxes at match venues.

The broadcaster earned Rs. 4-5 crore in ad revenue from 18 matches in the 2007 World Cup. “This time, we are excited and confident of earning more revenue because many of the matches are happening in India,” said the AIR executive.

Rajeev Shukla, deputy director of sports at AIR, said the World Cup commentary, both in Hindi and English, covered 70 stations to reach 95-98% of India’s population. “We are very happy with the response and the feedback that we are getting is positive,” he said.

But AIR’s news services division, which puts together more than 500 bulletins every day in 82 languages or dialects, of which 89 are broadcast from Delhi, is unhappy.

“In Delhi alone, 12-15 news bulletins apart from programmes on current affairs and personal finance will not be aired throughout this cricketing season,” said a news division official who refused to be named, saying the issue is sensitive. “We had made a special programme on the Rail Budget (of 25 February), but it was cancelled because of cricket commentary.” The executive said AIR’s news audience is complaining.

But other officials said the broadcaster shouldn’t miss on a rare chance to earn ad revenue.

“We hardly get any advertising on radio and it would be silly not to encash the World Cup,” said the first executive cited above.

“This (World Cup) is an important event and it’s our duty to air it,” said Shukla. He, however, added that the finance minister’s Union budget speech on 28 February will be broadcast live.

Companies and brands such as ITC Ltd, Bharti Airtel Ltd, Lava International Ltd and Coca Cola have already started advertising during AIR’s World Cup coverage.

“Given AIR’s wide reach, it makes sense for brands to advertise, especially if they want to look beyond just the metros,” said Basabdatta Chowdhuri, chief executive of Madison Media, an arm of marketing communications group Madison Communications Pvt Ltd. “Also, AIR’s cricket commentary has always been very impressive and, invariably, the inventory goes full.”

Although both AIR and the Doordarshan network of television channels are public service broadcasters under the autonomous Prasar Bharati, the two have entered into separate deals with ICC.

The Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act 2007 mandates that live television and radio feeds should be shared with Doordarshan and AIR for events deemed important for the nation by the government.

AIR has purchased the exclusive rights for World Cup’s radio broadcasting as no private radio broadcaster is allowed to uplink signals for news or live commentary in India.

“According to the current regulations, no private radio channel can beam current affairs programmes or live commentaries in the country since these come under the category of news,” said S. Keerthivasan, business head, radio and entertainment business, HT Media Ltd, which operates the Fever 104 FM brand. “That’s a reason why we cannot purchase rights for the matches.”
