Umpires vs DRS debate rages in ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

Umpires vs DRS debate rages in ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. Dhoni was the first to attack DRS. He was counterattacked by ICC officials. But the debate is not going to end here feels S Ahmed

It will take some time to count for how many times DRSes or Decision Review Systems have been asked for in the seventeen matches till the third of March, but in the match between Pakistan and Canada it was quite irritating to see the number of times the DRSes were used.

In Pakkistna innings Pakistan sought DRS at two times, both struck down. Similarly Canada appealed for DRS for once and that too was struck down.

But in Canada innings seven DRS were sought and five were upheld. Pakistan went for appeal five times against the umpiring decision in lbw, three times the umpire was declared wrong by another umpire. Canadian batsmen asked for the DRS two times, on both occasions the umpire had to reverse his decision.

In a match spanning over one ball short to 96 overs at ten times there was a stoppage due to the demand for DRS. And shockingly half of the decisions were reversed, which is a very telling comment on the standard of umpiring. It is also a statement how it may affect the entire game. It first started with the run outs, then came the catching and the leg before decision are allowed to be reviewed.

The number of times the decision is reversed the spectators start to judge the ability of the umpires while it has been put just as a technological assistance to them.

Every team can appeal for the DRS for any number of times if the appeal is successful, otherwise the number of DRS allowed is two, if both are struck down.

With the introduction of DRS and getting success five times out of ten times, players have to hone one new skill; to judge the angle and see the distance of the batsman from the crease when the ball hits him.

Questions have already been raised by Indian Skipper over DRS but that was for different reasons. Still the way DRSes are being used it may bring the correctness level to a new height.
