ICC CWC 201: Police say no to 4,000 ICC passes

In a move that has not gone down well with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), its associate club members as well as organisers and sponsors of the ICC World Cup, the Mumbai police have rejected accreditation passes issued by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to grant entry into the Wankhede Stadium for Saturday's title clash between India and Sri Lanka.

Further, as part of the security arrangements for the match, all non-ticket holders entering the stadium have been forced to queue up at the venue in advance to get their fingerprints scanned, before a special biometric passes is issued to them by the city police.

“Every single person, be it Sharad Pawar, MCA vice-president Dilip Vengsarkar or the Mumbai police commissioner, has had to get their fingerprints taken for the special passes issued for entry. Around 4,000 Mumbai police passes have been issued to the MCA and associate club members, organisers, private security guards, policemen posted inside the stadium, catering staff and so on. Only certain delegates and dignitaries as well as valid ticket-holders can skip this procedure,” said a senior Mumbai police officer involved in the security arrangements. ICC accreditation passes are meant to serve as a valid document for entry inside the different venues where matches are played through the tournament.

“We have decided to ignore these ICC accreditation passes as they are not foolproof and can be easily forged. We are also aware that some club members, especially those arriving from Mohali, had some complaints and wanted the process to be streamlined and expedited. We are working round-the-clock and the majority of biometric passes were issued yesterday. Some are being issued today as well,” said the officer. Deputy commissioner of police (Operations) Rajkumar Vhatkar said, “Everyone except those who will enter with tickets will need biometric passes.”

At a press conference on Thursday, Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik had admitted that his force was “overdoing” security arrangements for the final. “Such unprecedented security arrangements are nothing to be proud of or boast about, but they are in accordance with professional requirements. I admit we are on overkill, but it is better to be safe than sorry,” Patnaik had said.

Commenting on the procedure, MCA joint secretary Lalchand Rajput said, “We all are co-operating fully with the police and different agencies. They took fingerprints of every accredited card-holder and asked for details of card-holders coming for the match. The President of India is expected to watch the match and there is no doubt there will be VVIP movement here. We can't object to these things, after all it's a security issue.” However, an MCA member, who did not wish to be named, complained. “There is a big chance of chaos outside the stadium because everyone will be asked to punch in before entering the ground, which means there will be a big crowd lined up. There will be thousands of people who will be here for catering, cleaning and other odd jobs, and chances will be more that they have to come way before time.”

“The police even objected to the entry of ICC sponsors, who have spent so much money to get the rights. It's hard to make these cops understand, they are objecting to small things. For instance, they raised objections on why there are so many people from Bajaj Lights. We need them since after all, it’s a day-night game. We have raised the issue before the authorities concerned. They even stopped our former secretary PV Shetty's accreditation, who is now looking after the catering at the stadium,” he claimed.

World Cup 2011: Rs 45 crore tax waiver to ICC questioned by Maken, other ministers

The government's decision to give a Rs 45-crore tax waiver to the ICC for the World Cup has been questioned by some Ministers, including Sports Minister Ajay Maken , who felt the cash-rich cricket body did not need it and such a step should have been taken to promote other sports.

Maken, supported by Minister for Poverty Alleviation Selja and Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni, raised questions when the matter of waiver came up at the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here yesterday, sources said today.

The sources said the Sports Minister forcefully highlighted that while such sops were being given to cricket, which is already cash-rich sport, the funds for his ministry had been slashed.

He batted for more support to non-cricket sports, saying they also needed to be taken care of and promoted through financial help, the sources said.

While arguing his case, Maken pointed out that his ministry was planning to organise Panchayat-level sports events aimed at promoting sporting activities at the grassroots level which needed financial support, they said.

Maken was supported by Selja, who felt that his point was valid and needed to be considered.

Soni also backed Maken. She went on to question why private electronic media was being barred from covering the World Cup, referring to the stand-off between the broadcasting media and the ICC.

Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar , who is also ICC President, was present during the meeting but did not say anything, the sources said.

Proponents of the tax exemption, including Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel, however, argued that the law provided for such a measure and not granting it would amount to violation of the law.

The income tax exemption was granted to the ongoing cricket World Cup as it qualified criteria specified under the amendment of the Income Tax Act, 1961, in 2005 in wake of ICC Championship Trophy 2006.

To avail the tax exemption, an event has to be recognised by a global body governing the sport and there should be participation of more than two nations. Moreover, the specified income has to be notified by the government.

Sri Lankan ambassador opens his residence for World Cup final

In a rare gesture, Sri Lankan ambassador to the United States has invited cricket lovers and friends of his country to his residence to watch live the final match of the World Cup.

"The Embassy of Sri Lanka extends an open invitation to all cricket lovers to join this occasion," said a mass email sent by the Sri Lankan Embassy, adding that breakfast would be served to all those who join them to watch the mega event on a large screen.

"The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington DC is pleased to invite you to watch the live telecast of 2011 - ICC Cricket World Cup Finals between Sri Lanka and India, on large screen from 4.30am onwards on Sat., 2nd April, at the Ambassador's Residence," the invitation read.

Well aware that this could attract a large number of people, the invitation urged cricket lovers to send in their confirmation and seats would be reserved on a first-cum-first serve basis.

Indeed this would be one of the rarest occasions when the residence of an ambassador would be thrown open to the public at 4-30 in the morning.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 SWOT analysis of Team India

With Sachin Tendulkar planning to quit after this World Cup, the bar is set much higher for the Indian players. Team India stands as one of the favorites alongside a formidable Sri Lanka, a strong South Africa, T20 Champions England and the reigning ODI champions Australia. So here at Cric City we have done a SWOT analysis on the selection of Indian squad for the upcoming cricket fiesta.
ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 SWOT analysis of Team India

The players selected by BCCI are: MS Dhoni (Captain), V Sehwag (Vice-captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra, R Ashwin, Piyush Chawla.

Cricket experts say that bowlers win you test matches while batsmen win you ODI?s. If this is indeed true then India stands a bright chance for they have a splendid batting line up. Sachin ,Sehwag ,Gambhir take up the first three slots while ,Dhoni and Pathan will be at six and seven respectively. Num 4 and 5 slots will be a tossup between Kohli,Yuvraj and Raina. The bowling side has 3 spinners and 4 seamers. The bowling department may not look that strong with Nehra and Munaf there but considering Patel?s recent form he also becomes a force to reckon with. The spin attack led by Bhajji looks good and also the part timers have proved their worth.

Strengths:

Balanced Team: The team is a perfect combination of both experienced as well youth. Though the bowling department looks a little weak, presence of Zaheer and Harbhajan should exude confidence to others in the team. After a long time Indian tail has started wagging which was evident in the last Series as well as the warm up match against Australia.

Home Conditions: Since the World Cup is being played in the subcontinent, the Indian cricket team can expect the maximum crowd support. The Indian stadiums will be expecting a crowd of about 50,000.

Weakness:

Consistency: Off late team India has not being able to perform consistently. A lot of the games show that individual performers have saved the game. If the team India aims to win the WC then they have to perform collectively and every player have to play to their fullest.

Brittle Middle Order: Yuvaraj and Raina are not in good form and have been picked mainly based on their past performance. It is an altogether a different issue that both of them are game changers but their current forms are the weak links.

Absence of a genuine Allrounder: For the past 4 years selectors have been trying to groom one genuine allrounder , but with little sucesss. The fifth bowler slot is absent which makes the team to rely on bowlers like Yuvaraj and company.

Opportunities:

Spinning Subcontinent Pitches: The pitches in the subcontinent are very favorable for spinners and India has opted for 3 spinners. Its part-timers are also spinners. Both Ashwin and Chawla have a chance to shine in their 1st WC and aid Bhajji in the sub-continent conditions. With spinners, India would be restricting the opposition at the same time will be an attacking team.

Virat Kohli: The young star has been in brilliant touch and was India's highest run-getter in 2010 so this is the big chance for him to stand out and fix his place in the team's middle order.

Sachin Swansong: The only accolade missing in Tendulkar's illustrious career. The entire country wants it for him and also the entire team wants to win the cup for him. This should act as an extra motivation for everyone in the team.

Threats:

Injuries: A lot of Indian players have just come back after injuries. Though fully fit their fitness would still be suspect and they would be short of match practice.

No back-up keeper: So who keeps if MSD is declared unfit right before a match?

India-Pakistan cricket game generates top dollars

Cricket might already be immensely popular in India but this time around, the general interest is even higher than normal — and so are the ad rates, according to industry sources.

Fans of India pose in T-shirts with the faces of Indian players before the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 semifinal match between India and Pakistan in Mohali March 30, 2011.
The governments of the two nuclear rivals have even used the occasion to rekindle peace talks for the first time since the 2008 Mumbai attacks. It’s only the fifth World Cup meeting between the two since the International Cricket Council launched it in 1972, the last time being in 2007.
“There’s always an increase during the cricket season, even more so for the World Cup,” says Amit Ahire, a media-and-entertainment analyst with Alchemy Share & Stock Brokers. “But this time, with India moving to the semifinal and playing Pakistan, there’s been an even sharper increase in rates for ads for Wednesday’s game.”
ESPN Star Sports, which bought the official broadcasting rights from ICC for close to $2 billion, has hiked its rates for 10-second ads in Wednesday’s game more than fivefold to between 1.8 million rupees and 2 million rupees ($40,000 to $45,000), according to ad-industry sources.
“It’s the highest it’s ever been in my career,” said Jai Lala, principal partner, at Mindshare Advertising, who’s been in the Indian ad business for 15 years.

Semi final India vs Pakistan: numbers don't favour Pak on Mar 30

NUMEROLOGIST SANJAY B Jumaani, on his website, has outlined his predictions. According to Jumaani, “Not only the odds, but the numbers too are piled up in India's favor.

As predicted much before the Cup, if we have to do well, 3,6,9 (a family) are the numbers that have mattered the most for India (3, Jupiter) or Bharat (6, Venus).”

Here's why Jumaani thinks that numbers are stacked against Pakistan. “Last year when Sri Lanka and South Africa toured India, ALL the matches were ‘fixed’ – no pun intended whatsoever - by BCCI on dates adding to a 3, 6 or 9 - including the two Twenty-20 Matches against Sri Lanka! And we won both the series comfortably.”

In this World Cup also, the same numbers have played a significant role. Most matches before the quarter final stages took place on 3, 6, 9 dates. For instance, the matches were on 27th (Bangladesh), 6th (Ireland) 9th (Netherlands) and 12th (South Africa).

Furthermore, India beat defending champions on the 24th! What’s more, India meet Pakistan on 30th (3) in a do-or-die semi-final.

Going by this trend in numbers, Jumaani believes that, “The next match maybe ours too on 30th (3) in Mohali (adds to 21)! The name Mumbai adds to 18 (9!) too.”

Numerologist Anupam Kapil told this CJ that he is backing India from an altogether different perspective. “Pakistan lost wars with India when the playing days were 5, 6, 3 and 3 and also when the month in which Kargil war took place was the third, and when the playing day was 5 they lost the war in Bangladesh,” said Kapil.

“They have lost all the wars in their unfavorable numbers and so if this match is played like a war, Pakistan are bound to lose, despite other factors that are supporting Afridi’s team and though fate no 3, ruled by Jupiter has favoured Pakistan in the past, but now Jupiter which is their bhagya sthan lord is ‘combust’ along with Mars, ruler of their ascendant,” said Kapil.

While both captains’ charts and numbers are not so good, the overall advantage remains with India, which has a probability of 70:30 to win on the 30th.

On asked to compare charts of both nations, Kapil said that “Pakistan is Mesha lagna and Kanya rashi under sade satti and so they may be deprived of ultimate success even after coming this far and both Jupiter and Mars are ‘combust’ for them.”

While for Pakistan its “mithun rashi is afflicted by Ketu now. India is Vrushabh lagna and karka rashi, and this shall help India as Venus is now moving into India’s 10th house,” said Kapil.

The numerologist said that Yuvraj Singh “will surely play very well in both bowling and batting and we should expect yet another entertaining performance from him as Mohali also adds to his lucky number 3. He should wear a yellow band to strengthen Jupiter, which has become combust now. This may be his big game again.”

Kapil is not all that confident about Tendulkar, though. “He can make a very good score, he must play easy and slow, that will help him and the team. There is no doubt that if he sticks down, there will be history in the making. Numbers and planets do support him. If India bats first, he must not play lofted strokes.”

The numbers as per Kapil say that Yuvraj, Sachin, Sehwag, Harbhajan, Raina, Zaheer, Ashwin - in that order – will put in good performances. For Pakistan, players expected to do well are: Mohammad Younus Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, Asad Shafiq, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, and Wahib Riaz.

The details are based on the Date & Time of the Match, Shahid Afridi's Natal Chart & Dhoni’s Natal Chart:

M. S Dhoni is in the major period of Rahu and in the minor period of Saturn. Both the major and minor lords are along with Venus & Jupiter respectively. Moreover, Moon is in between both Rahu and Saturn in his Birth chart and it will help Dhoni to take up perfect decisions. Rahu is also under the influence of Saturn in the second house. Ketu is in the 8th house and this is an added advantage for Dhoni. The planetary positions are also indicating that the unexpected happenings will also be favorable for Dhoni.

Shahid Afridi is in the major period of Jupiter in the minor period of Rahu. So Jupiter is in its own sign Pisces and is in the transit which is the advantage for Afridi. Rahu is in the 8th house and is not favorable for him. This indicates that he may take some hasty decisions either in choosing the bowler or while choosing the team. But the sign lord of Rahu is Mars, who is in exalted manner in his Birth Chart and is favoring Afridi.

Overall, the India Vs Pakistan Semi Final will be a very tight match and the winner will be decided in the death overs. Even the win will be in a small margin. However, chances are seen for Dhoni and company to win the match.

Based on the Prasna Chart: - Prasna is also indicating that the match will be decided in the slog over’s and it will be a very tight match. It will be an edge of the seat thriller in which chances are bright for India.

India vs Pak: Rs 250 ticket sells for Rs 24k in battleground Mohali

Chandigarh As Chandigarh bristles with anticipation and anxiety for the do-or-die semi-final clash with Pakistan Wednesday, the local police are quietly about their way fortifying the city as well as weeding out all those who are making the moolah in blackmarket ticketing.
The Chandigarh Police late on Sunday night rounded up a software engineer, who was selling Rs 250-each tickets for Rs 24,000 on an online shopping website.

The engineer, Mandeep Singh Bhangu, has been arrested. Five Rs 250 tickets were recovered from this engineer who has recently returned from England after completing his education.

The police nabbed him after posing as prospective buyers. the cyber cell responded to the online advertisement and offered a bid of Rs 90,000 for the five tickets. They left behind a phone number for him to contact.

Within minutes, a cyber cell official said, Singh called back and started haggling over the price. Still in disguise, the police asked him to come down to Sector 11 with the tickets. This son of a retired Major Subedar walked right into their trap.

In-charge cyber cell Neeraj Sarna later said: “Blackmarketing is at an all-time high now.”

Meanwhile, unprecedented security has descended like a blanket on Mohali, the seat of Wednesday's showdown.

With both India and Pakistan premiers in attendance, the security was expected. The National Security guard (NSG) and the Special Protection Group (SPG) are in charge of the arrangements. There will be nearly 2,000 securitymen in and around the Mohali stadium.

Mohali has already been declared a no-fly zone. There will also be anti-aircraft guns positioned strategically in the city. Nobody is allowed to enter the stadium after 1.30 pm, the organisers said.

The VVIPs will be seated in 350 seats in a special enclosure.

India vs Pakistan Semi Final bigger than final of ICC World Cup 2011 ?

It seems that the semi final between arch rivals India and Pakistan is even bigger than the final of ICC World Cup 2011. After it was scheduled, the whole nation couldn't find anything else to talk about, some companies have declared holidays to give a treat to their employees and big names including politicians & tycoons are seeking permissions for their jets to land in Mohali to witness the mother of all clashes in this Maha Kumb of cricket.

With the scale of the match has gone so big, there is no wonder that the amount of money being bet is also huge. While bookies are refusing to hazard a guess as to the amount being wagered, sources said that the money bet on Wednesday’s match is easily more than all the money bet on India’s matches in the World Cup so far.

“This is big, India and Pakistan have not played for a long while, and so everyone is betting on it. Even those who don’t usually bet are calling the punters and putting in Rs.50,000 to Rs.5 lakh,” said a bookie on condition of anonymity.

The punters said that India was the overwhelming favourite to win the match and the rates reflect that. Bookies have slotted India at 58 paise while Pak is at Rs1.60. So if one bets Rs.100 on India and they win, one would get 58 paise on every rupee.

Similarly, if one puts Rs.100 on Pak and they win, one would get Rs.2.60 for every rupee. “These are home conditions, our batting is strong, we have been favourites from the beginning and the team has not disappointed.

“India has played well. Against England, they managed to tie a match that could have been lost. We played well against South Africa but lost the match in the last over.

“Pakistan, on the other hand, have not been challenged as strongly. They did win against Australia but it is not given much importance. Similarly, the win against Sri Lanka does not matter as they did not have Lasith Malinga in their team,” said a bookie.

Interestingly, he added that there are many ‘patriotic’ punters who would bet on India even if the team was not in a good position.

“There are many deshbhakt (patriotic) Indian punters who always bet on a match involving India and Pakistan. “It wouldn’t matter if India was playing on a docile wicket in Sharjah on a Friday or in a fast-bowler friendly wicket in Rawalpindi, they would still bet all their money on India if they were playing against Pakistan. That’s how it goes and that’s how it has always been,”said the bookie.

Dhoni in the match presentation ceremony against Australia mentioned that people would now be of the view that Team India shall win semi final and it wouldn't matter if they do not bring the cup home, but the skipper clarified that every game is equally important and there is no better thing than lifting the prestigious trophy of cricket.

City cops send Rs1.6 crore World Cup bill to BCCI

When the World Cup euphoria is over, and the Board of Cricket Control in India sits down to square away the accounts, they will have to set aside Rs 1.60 crore to Chennai police. That's the bill for all the anti-aircraft guns, crouching commandos, and hovering choppers deployed by the city police during Chennai matches. "We have prepared the bills to be sent to BCCI," a police officer said.

Following the terror threat, city police prepared a detailed bandobust scheme to give extensive security for the players during the matches. The players were escorted to the hotel from Chenani airport by armed policemen in a tourist bus. The security at the hotel was also tight. One whole floor was cordoned off by the police where the players were stayed. Players had the cautious eyes of cops watching over them even during net practice.

City police arrived at the figure of Rs 1.6 crore based on the number of policemen deployed inside and outside the stadium for player security. This included armed policemen escorting the players from the hotel to the stadium, as well as those who provided security in the hotel.

For the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches conducted in MAC Stadium in 2010, city police had collected Rs 1.06 crore from IPL office bearers. "This is routine for the city police. For the world cup, we will collect the money from BCCI," city police commissioner T Rajendran told TOI.

Five international cricket matches including the India - West Indies match was held in the MAC Stadium, apart from a practice match held prior to the world cup, which started on March 19, 2011. During the India - West Indies match, city police roped in coast guard and defence personnel for security. The defence personnel were armed with anti-aircraft guns and placed inside the stadium premises. "The sharp shooters were there to quickly bring down suspicious aircraft flying above," a police officer said.

Now, a social networking site on cricket

When India takes on arch-rivals Pakistan in a high-voltage clash at the World Cup semi-finals on Wednesday, not all cricket buffs would be hooked solely to their television sets this time.

Many of them would be simultaneously glued to their computer screens discussing ball-by-ball updates with fellow netizens on 'soch.la', which advertises itself as the world's first social cricket platform.

Combining the elements of Facebook and Twitter, the new social networking website has thousands of passionate cricket fans commenting, chatting and sharing their opinions as every game unfolds in the ongoing World Cup.

Apart from being a platform to share the frenzy around the countrys most popular sport, the one-of-its-kind site launched by digital marketing firm Digital Vidya also updates its users on live scores, teams and players.

"Cricket is a game which is best enjoyed with friends. Rather than just watching the match, 'soch.la' gives cricket lovers an opportunity to come together and enjoy cricket with their friends and family, while cheering for their favourite teams," the site's co-founder Pradeep Chopra told PTI.

The social network uses the Twitter's terminology of "followers" as users get updates of comments posted by those whom they are "following". On the other hand, the process of commenting on posts is similar to that of Facebook, the world's largest social networking site.

Led by the current mania over cricket due to the world cup matches and the upcoming glamour-rich IPL, the site, with an unusual domain name, is turning out to be a favourite among sport followers.

"After I logged onto soch.la during a recent match, it was for the first time that I didn't watch cricket on TV while I was at home. Unaware of Soch.la, my wife saw me smiling while I was engaged with my friends on Soch.la and enquired why I was not watching the match," said Vikas Kaushik, a cricket lover and CEO of an IT company.

The idea of the niche social network cropped up when Chopra was discussing with his IIT friends Kapil Nakra and Manas Garg few weeks ago on how to have more fun around the ongoing World Cup.

"We have always believed in creating something which is useful for us first and then making it available to others. This time we got a reason to fulfill our passion for cricket through Soch.la," says Chopra adding that they are evolving the website almost on a daily basis based on real user inputs by focusing on "user experience and user growth."

Encouraged by the positive response, the founders are now planning to monetise the venture by building up a business model around advertising and introducing "social games". India vs Pak: Fans scramble for tickets for 'mother of all battles'

Tickets for the much-anticipated India-Pakistan World Cup semifinal have been sold out days ago but the mad scramble for them continues with desperate fans flocking the PCA stadium here even on Saturday.

Scores of fans could be seen moving around the stadium hoping desperately to grab a ticket from somewhere.

On Tuesday itself, the PCA had announced that 14,000 tickets at its disposal had been sold to the public through the designated bank and its counters and asked the fans not to approach them now.

However, fans are not prepared to give up. "I have been coming here since Monday, but have not been able to get any ticket," said Vikas Sharma, a young executive with a private company.

Allegations that black marketers are making a killing have been flying thick and fast.

"The tickets are available, but if you pay Rs 3,000 for a Rs 250 ticket and shell out Rs 10,000 for a Rs 1,000 ticket.

Those selling in black have managed to purchase tickets in bulk," alleged Ram Kumar, a bank officer in Chandigarh.

"The semi-final match is going to be mother of all battles, in a way even bigger than the finals. Genuine fans should not be deprived of watching the match and police should take tough action against those selling in black," he said.

A good number of fans are also expected to come here from across the border to support Pakistan.

Representatives of some corporates willing to pay astronomical amounts could be seen making a beeline outside the PCA in their desperate bid to get tickets of the prized boxes.

Meanwhile, with top dignitaries from India and Pakistan expected to be there to watch the match, top police brass reviewed the security arrangements that will be put in place.

Nearly 2,000 cops are expected to be deployed in and around the PCA stadium as part of security measures, police sources said.

On Friday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sent an invite to his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani and President Asif Ali Zardari to watch the match.

"We are also expecting many other top dignitaries from the two countries and therefore maximum security will be in place for the match," a Punjab police official said.

Hotel Taj in Chandigarh, about 12km from here, where the two teams are staying has been turned into a fortress with 1,000 cops deployed for security.

Chandigarh and Punjab police are also coordinating to ensure adequate security for the high-voltage match.

Hotels within a radius of 30 km from Chandigarh, including those in its adjoining towns of Panchkula and Mohali, have been booked to capacity in view of the great demand from the fans.

India vs Pak: Rs 250 ticket sells for Rs 24k in battlefield Mohali

As Chandigarh bristles with anticipation and anxiety for the do-or-die semi-final clash with Pakistan Wednesday, the local police are quietly about their way fortifying the city as well as weeding out all those who are making the moolah in blackmarket ticketing.

India turns to internet for latest cricket updates

Action-packed weekday cricket World Cup matches seem to have driven bumper traffic to internet sites in India.

According to Comscore, the tournament has caused a surge in visitation to cricket sites in India, as fans went online for the latest results and match updates. Sites reached their highest volume of traffic for the month during the week ending March 13, with 16.4 per cent of India’s online population visiting www.ESPNCricInfo.com and 13.4 per cent of web users visiting Yahoo Cricket.

For Wednesday’s India-Pakistan semi-final match, Google reports that use of its search engine have surged multifold. It said tickets for the match, at Mohali, have topped the search queries, followed by hotels to stay. “Maximum searches are coming from Karnataka, followed by Delhi and Maharashtra,” reports Google.

“The internet continues to play an increasingly important role in sports tournaments across the globe, as fans turn to the web for real-time updates, results and live-streaming of matches,” said Joe Nguyen, Comscore’s vice president for Southeast Asia. “We expect to see even greater visitation to cricket-related sites with the upcoming rivalry match between India and Pakistan on March 30, which is sure to be followed with great interest in both countries.”

In fact, live streaming of the India-South Africa match on www.espnstar.com has broken India’s online streaming record, with over three million streams being delivered to 1.5 million consumers on the mThe site generated a little more than 175 million page views between February 15 and March 23. It saw 20 million users in the period.

Aloke Malik, managing director, ESPN Software India, said: “The response to live streaming of ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 on espnstar.com has been amazing. Consumers have enjoyed high quality online stream, which works well even on low bandwidth. We expect the traction to build as we progress further in the tournament.”

India vs Pak semi-final: Mixing diplomacy and cricket is unfair

CRICKET FEVER is at its peak in the sub-continent and with arch-rivals India and Pakistan all set to take on each other at Mohali on Wednesday, the atmosphere is all charged up with emotions running high and people are making sure that they don’t miss this game wherever they are in the World as the mother of all games will decide who is going to the finals of the World Cup 2011 to be held in Mumbai on April 2.

The two teams have already reached Chandigarh and with all hotels booked to capacity, there are no rooms left for visitors from Pakistan, who are now travelling to nearby cities to get accommodation.

All roads lead to Mohali and with Indian players in great form, India hopes to get to the finals if diplomacy does not come to interfere in the match.

The recent invitation sent to Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani by Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to watch the semi-final match between India and Pakistan at Mohali, has put many minds in clouds of uncertainty as all have been reminded of an earlier invitation sent to the then Pakistan’s president Pervez Musharraf in 2005 to watch the India-Pakistan one day match at Feroz Shah Kotla.

During that match India literally gifted that series to Pakistan, Indian captain Saurav Ganguly looked completely dejected but could not utter a word, after which we all come across the term “cricket diplomacy.”

The India-Pakistan cricket match is mother of all matches. It is not less than a war of emotions and excitement goes high with entire nation coming to a halt to watch this game of cricket. I personally feel politicians should stay away and instead of sacrificing the spirit of game for diplomacy, better they watch it on their TV sets rather than going to stadium and putting unnecessary pressure on the players.

Many of us still are not able to understand what is the compulsion to invite Pakistan leaders to India to watch cricket matches, and what benefit will this move give in solving pending disputes between the two nations? Earlier also we have seen Zia ul Haq and Pervez Musarraf coming to India for cricket diplomacy but without an result? The disputes are still lingering on and we still stand on the losing side.

Let the diplomacy be limited to New Delhi only and Mohali be allowed to have a free and fair game. If diplomacy is going to take the driver’s seat then India is going to gift this match to Pakistan under  pressure. Better we allow the players to play their natural game and let the best team win the match.

India vs Pakistan semi final: Bookies favour Dhoni

THIS MATCH has everything going for it as it offers the prospects of top class cricket, a great cricket ground, lakhs of fans rooting for two teams and the traditional India-Pakistan rivalry on the field and off it.

In addition, cricket diplomacy has added an extra sheen of political power play to an already glamourised 'match of matches' between India and Pakistan.

India has been given top ratings by the bookmakers as it was also the pre-tournament favourite to lift the ICC cricket world cup 2011 trophy.

Despite captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team not playing in the usual flamboyant style as is expected of potential winners, it has come out with some outstanding performances to prove a threat to other teams. India despite having a weak bowling and a jittery fielding side has won the confidence of bookmakers, who are offering 2.6 dollars for every dollar put on India.

In comparison to India, for every dollar put on Pakistan, the bookmakers are offering 5.25 dollars. This is despite the fact that Pakistan has been the most consistent team in the ongoing ICC cricket world cup with captain Shahid Afridi going great guns with the ball.

Pakistani bowlers have delivered during the tournment and it would be a sight to watch as to how Indian greats such as Tendulkar and Sehwag handle the fire and fury of this young side.

This being possibly the last world cup of the little master, a lot of emotions are also accompanying this match as most of cricket lovers want India to win the world cup as a tribute to the master blaster.

Indian team's performance on Wednesday would depend a lot on Sachin as to how he deconstructs the Pakistan attack as he has done it so many times in the past.

On the other side of the Palk Strait, Sri Lanka will take on New Zealand, the dark horse of the ICC cricket World cup 2011. The Kiwis defeated the South Africans to enter the semifinals, in what could be termed as the most dramatic upset of the tournament.

However, they are not the favourites against the Sri Lankans as the islanders are tipped to win the semifinal match. For every dollar on New Zealand, the bookies are offering 10.5 dollars, whereas Sri Lanka's going rate is 5.1 dollars for each dollar put on the team.
