Indian model Poonam Pandey is not the first and probably won't be the last in vowing to strip naked if her country wins a major sports event.
Her promise to strip naked if India wins the cricket World Cup is similar to that of Paraguyan model Larissa Riquelme at last year's football World Cup.
Riquelme chose to follow through with her promise even though Paraguay didn't win the World Cup.
Pandey's promise - which she categorically denies is a publicity stunt - in a country of devout Hindus and Muslims, has already attracted its share of criticism.
The 20 year-old said she first intended to go naked for fans in the stadium, and then in the dressing room, in front of the Indian team.
''Showing happiness through nudity is against Indian values. I must congratulate her that she feels happy enough to do so, but there are other ways to show happiness,'' says Vinod Bansal of Vishwa Hindu Parishad said in the Hindustan Times.
''We are totally against such vulgarity and obscenity,'' fumes Shalini Thackeray of the right-wing group Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.
Sena said it would handle things ''their way'' if the government didn't step in to stop such gimmicks.
Pandey was unfazed.
''I don’t care if people have a problem. I am one of the most downloaded models online. I don't need to do this for publicity. I am doing what I want to do,'' she said.
British newspaper website, Metro.co.uk, quoted Pandey as saying: "I'm confident of my body and I'm doing this to excite our boys to play better.''
