Bangladesh defeated England by 2 wickets on the evening of Friday 11th March 2011 as the two sides met in an important Group B ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 match.
Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field before removing England – who remain short of an established opener – for 225 All Out in 49.4 overs.
Bangladesh looked on course for a comfortable victory at 155 for 3, but, when Kayes (60), who had batted extremely well in difficult conditions, was run out going for two runs which were never on, a mini collapse began in earnest, and Bangladesh lost five wickets for just 14 runs as they fell to 169 for 8.
With home fans in Chittagong streaming for the exits in desolate mood, the match swung around once more as Shafiul Islam (24 Not Out) smashed Graeme Swann for first a four, then, next ball, a huge six over long on, on the bowler’s last two deliveries, signalling the start of an inspired 48 run unbroken partnership with Mahmudullah (21 Not Out).
James Anderson and Tim Bresnan were unable to contain the Bangladesh youngster, Shafiul Islam, when the batting power play kicked in during the final few overs, and a boundary took Bangladesh past England’s total with an over to spare, completing a remarkable victory.
The result sparked joyous celebrations from the home fans – including the ground staff – as Bangladesh took the win needed to stay in contention for a Quarter Final place.
