RCom, TELibrahma to offer Cricket video updates

Telecom service provider Reliance Communications has partnered with mobile solutions provider TELibrahma to deliver video updates and replays from the ICC World Cup Cricket matches on mobiles for all cricket lovers.

With this partnership, TELiBrahma would deploy bluetooth device in stadiums and enable consumers to receive video highlights when they are watching the match in the stadium, RCom said in a statement today.

“We believe it would help consumers to catch the missing action. This opportunity will help brands to deliver what is relevant to consumers at the place where it matters and on a device that creates the impact,” the TELiBrahma President, Mr P.R. Satheesh, said.

The tie-up will also enable RCom consumers to view the highlights and action replays of cricket matches for free.

The solution is supported on more than 80 per cent of the mobile phones in India and works across phone models, operators and geographies.

The Teams

At this stage, India is sitting pretty with their quarterfinal berth booked, while South Africa have everything to play for. Three wins and one tie have not done the Indian Cup prospects any harm whatsoever, although recurring poor fielding is a major area of concern for MS Dhoni. He has harped on it at two successive post-match interviews, simultaneously admitting that there was not much scope for improvement on that front.

The Indian batting has ditched its flamboyance from the previous games in favour of a more circumspect outlook. This attitude may have largely been an ode to slower pitches, but has not played its part in stemming the fall of wickets. Things could have gone either way until Yuvraj Singh arrived at the crease with metaphorically rolled-up sleeves and took matters beyond the reach of the opposition.

South Africa, for their part, bullied West Indies in their first match and went on to trample all over the Dutchmen. However, things got real interesting on Sunday in Chennai versus a wounded England, placed in a do-or-die situation. Restricting England to 171 may have made their task seem initially easy, but the Proteas also suffered from slow-pitch blues and a lower-middle order slump. In spite of measured double-figure contributions from the top five, headed by Amla (42), the regular coming-and-going of batsmen at the crease kept the English bowlers interested.

A steadfast Morne van Wyk could not hang on to his wicket and see things through to the desired result. In the end, South Africa will be left feeling the heat with their traditional match-winner Mark Boucher gone. The lower middle order should quickly reconcile to what is expected of them, in order to avoid such slumps in future.

The Pitch

The pitch at the VCA has had a bit of a rest since February 28th. Zimbabwe managed 298 runs on it, proving it good for batting. There can really be no excuse for not making the most of the ideal conditions and getting the runs on the board.

Players to watch

Now that Yuvraj Singh has decided to awaken from his long slumber and contribute to proceedings, in whatever manner possible, it enlivens things for the entire Indian team. His bowling performances have taken the pressure of the other non-performing bowlers constituting the side. Who wins?

If India do not take on the "chokers" mantle from the South Africans and if their bowling does not dramatically let them down, they should come out on top in this meeting. India may have maintained their unbeaten run in the World Cup by defeating the Netherlands on Wednesday, but Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s strategies seem stubborn.

Persevering with an off-colour Piyush Chawla is an attempt to justify his selection in the squad. Although Dhoni has said that the leg-spinner needs confidence, we are getting into the business end of the tourn ment and it’s high time we stopped experimenting. What has been done can’t be undone, so looking forward to the match against South Africa in Nagpur, I would like Dhoni to play three pacers and a lone spinner in Harbhajan Singh.

Not only the bowling line-up, but the batting-order too needs to be stable. None of the top four batsmen have been consistent and changing the order doesn’t help their confidence much.

While Virender Sehwag has categorically said that he would look to play right through the innings, he has failed to do that except for the opening match against Bangladesh. Even Virat Kohli started off impressively, but has failed to build on that. I feel the batsmen have failed to apply themselves.

Looking at the wicket at the Kotla on Wednesday, there was no need for batsmen to go for their shots, but they perished trying to do just that. Better application is a must, now that we are gearing up for the knock-out stages. I was also surprised that Dhoni refused to bowl out Ashish Nehra.

Since he is coming back from injury, one would have expected that Dhoni would test his fitness by getting him to bowl 10 overs.

With conditions in Nagpur favouring swing bowlers, I would expect Nehra to have a big role to play. But we need back-up for both Zaheer Khan and Nehra as both are prone to injuries and if they break down at this stage, it would spell curtains for India going into the knockout stages.

This is where I feel Munaf Patel should come in. With Yuvraj Singh doing really well, I feel Harbhajan as the lone spinner is enough. Frankly, Yuvraj is bowling better than the regular spinners.

While we have talked about how bowling has been our weakness, the batsmen have failed in the last two outings. I think it is time that they play according to the situation rather than getting carried away — especially against South Africa because they are fierce competitors and after the loss against England, they will be coming hard at the Indians. Today’s game is definitely the toughest for India and if they can beat the Proteas, the other teams will sit up and take notice.

South Africa have good pacers as well as spinners. Imran Tahir’s injury it shouldn’t count for much as Indians have been known to play spinners well. I feel even South Africa’s middleorder is pretty dangerous and the Indians will be hoping that their poor form continues.

About two weeks into the ICC World Cup 2011, ratings for the first 10 matches of the series have been released by TAM Sports. So far, the top rated matches have been the India-Bangladesh opening match and the last of the TAM Week 9’11 bunch, the Pakistan-Sri Lanka match played on Saturday, February 26, which rated a 3.28 TVR in CS-4 plus all India markets.

As per the data, the tournament is seeing a viewership interest ranging from 1 to 1.5 plus TVR in All India markets in games that have strong teams and audience following such as England, Pakistan, Australia and Sri Lanka.

Matches such as Netherlands versus England, which left audiences at the edge of their seats until the last over, has rated the third highest, with a peak rating of 4.8 TVR, tying on an All India level with West Indies versus South Africa at 1.68 TVR. Another such a crowd pulling match was that between Bangladesh and Ireland that left audiences glued through the game, drawing a peak rating of 3.12 TVR.

In the next batch of highly viewed matches came in Australia versus Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka versus Canada, and Pakistan versus Kenya, scoring ratings of about 1.3 to1.5 TVR, despite some being on weekdays in the 2 pm time slot. Primetime scheduling of matches has not attracted substantial viewership as was the case with the Kenya-New Zealand or New Zealand-Australia matches, which have scored about 1 TVR.

As of February 26, 2011, among the ratings for the 10 matches of the tournament, the highest rated match has been the opening match of India versus Bangladesh at 7.47 TVR, peaking at 12.2 TVR.

Industry heads have been positive about the format this season and the strong points of the ICC World Cup 2011 have been highlighted by many industry watchers. For starters, many measures have been taken by the BCCI and ICC to ensure India’s presence late into the series. Commenting on the tailor-made format cut out for the World Cup this year, Rajneesh Chaturvedi, National Director, MEC Access, said, “Non-India matches have always delivered low on numbers. It will be interesting to see how much these matches deliver this time around. Most of the matches are Day/ Night games and these would end in the prime time. The timing of the matches should help in the ratings specially the non-India ones.”

“There will be little interest during some of the non-India matches, but it isn’t as bad. Barring the last seven matches (quarters, semis & final) and six India matches, there are about eight good matches (likes of Sri Lanka versus Pakistan), about 18 average matches (likes of Bangladesh versus South Africa) and about 10 matches that involves the minnows. About 20 per cent matches are likely to be of minimum interest. If we get desired response from the 80 per cent matches, those 20 per cent will be averaged out,” reasoned Vidyadhar Kale, Client Leader, Maxus Mumbai.

“I would not term it as low, but lower than India matches,” said Sushma Jhaveri, Senior Vice President, Carat. According to her, there was no surprise about lower interest in non-India matches given the disparity in ratings. “The strength of tournament lies in the fact that it happens once in four years and in the Indian Sub-continent. Unlike the last World Cup, this time the matches are also on during primetime and then there is the Sachin factor,” she added.

Speaking to exchange4media, Sanjay Kailash, Executive Vice President, Advertising Sales and New Media, ESPN Software India, said, “Format change is one key game changer, but the event coming to India is the biggest factor that has given the thrust. Timings are more suited to Indian audiences, noise around the event has been huge and the choice of getting to see your country play live is a huge attraction. This year, many things have been revised with the number of groups being collapsed to two, matches scattered in such a manner with India matches almost till the end of the tournament and scheduled on weekends. The Indian team will also be well rested and the Day/ Night timing is well suited. India forms up to 85 per cent of cricket viewership worldwide and the BCCI and ICC boards are well aware of suiting the needs to the market. The format helps stronger teams come to quarter and semis; earlier, if you lose one match, it may be difficult to stay on in the tournament, whereas this time, consistent teams will remain till the end.”
