The Group A encounter between lilliputs of world cricket may not thrill cricket aficionados but it is expected to bring out the best in Kenya and Canada.
There is nothing much to chose between the two sides. If we go by reputation, the African side has a slight advantage with the likes of Steve Tikolo and Thomas Odoyo in their ranks. However, if we go by recent form, the North Americans might just be able to eke out a win if their batting woes end.
Both teams come into the game with a dip in confidence after three losses but a realistic opportunity to win in the ICC Cricket World Cup will spur players to give their 110 per cent.
“Ideally, we must perform well against an Associate team like Canada. We will definitely earn more respect by doing well and hopefully we will win on Monday,” said Kenyan skipper Jimmy Kamande.
Canadian skipper Ashish Bagai is confident of a win if his batters get their bearings right.
“The game presents us with our first chance of a win. If our batsman going, we should be very competitive. The bowling has improved with leaps and bounds but we need to bat well,” Bagai told reporters on the eve of the tie.
The Kotla wicket saw spin rule in the South Africa versus West Indies clash while the pace of Kemar Roach dominated Windies tie against the Netherlands. Bagai, though, feels Monday will be a game of spin.
“Looking at the last two games, spinners have dominated on this track. We have Balaji Rao who bowled well against Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, so he will play a big role for us. We are looking to play Parth Desai, our other spinner who might open the bowling. If John Davison plays, we’ll tap the spinner in him too,” said Bagai.
Kamande wants to win the game for the Kenyans while Bagai hopes to impress the Canadian team followers who will support their players from Asian origin. But, who will impress ICC?
