ICC Cricket World Cup: South Africa bowl woeful England out for 171

CHENNAI: South Africa bowled out England for 171 runs in 45.4 overs after England captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and elected to bat against South Africa in a Group B ICC Cricket World Cup match at the MAC stadium here.

Left arm spinner Robin Peterson, opening the bowling, got rid of both England openers and Ian Bell, to leave them reeling at 15 for 3 in the third over.

Jonathan Trott and Ravi Bopara added 99 runs for the fourth wicket and seemed set to take their team to a competitive total, when Tahir caught Trott off his own bowling for a sedate 52 off 94 balls.

Matt Prior (10 off 19 balls) came and went inside 20 runs, and was followed by Bopara (60 off 98 balls), with the score at 148. Both fell to Morne Morkel's medium pace.

Dale Steyn took the wicket of Bresnan and the English tail had nothing to offer as Tahir picked up three more wickets to end with 4 for 38 in 8.4 overs.
