ICC has agreed to give a temporary access to the non-rights-holder news channels to cover the World Cup semifinal between India and Pakistan. The news channels have got a big relief because more than match, they will be able to cover the cricket diplomacy during the India-Pakistan semi final. Indian Prime Minister and his Pakistani counterpart will be discussing various issues over cricket in Mohali stadium.

On Monday, ICC gave a shocker to electronic media by canceling the accreditation of all non-rights holder news channels for not following ICC guidelines for the broadcast.

The decision was strongly protested by News Broadcasting Association when its representatives met the Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni on Tuesday morning who later stepped into the matter and wrote a letter to ICC president Sharad Pawar requesting him to allow the electronic media to cover the event.

Soni sought for a 24-hour ‘truce’ in a dispute created by non-rights holder news channels by breaching the terms and conditions they had agreed to follow when they were awarded accreditation for the World Cup.

The minister will convene a meeting on tomorrow to address the dispute. It is believed that the breaches have been of a commercial nature where there could be elements of ambush marketing involved with the news channels running shows sponsored by companies that are in competition with the ICC sponsors.

In the meanwhile, News Broadcasting Association had also issued a statement protesting the action taken by ICC. The NBA said, “In view of the unreasonable stand taken by the ICC at a crucial juncture of the ICC World Cup 2011 matches, which  almost completely prohibits reporting of news relating to such an important event, and which is also in disregard of the fair dealing dispensation available to broadcasters under the Indian Copyright Law, the NBA Board has decided that its members would stand united and voluntarily desist from accessing match venues or availing any other accreditation benefits like attending press conferences, practice sessions, interviews etc.”

As groggy-eyed passengers alighted at the Chandigarh Railway station from the World Cup special train from Delhi, the word cricket was enough to catch their attention and awaken the enthusiasm to root for India.

The semi-final clash between India and Pakistan, considered the final before the final has people from all parts of the country and abroad making a beeline for the city. Keeping in view the rush, the Railways, in an unprecedented manner, arranged for a special train that brought the passengers to the station a little before 4.30 am. The train would return at 12.30 am.

“Its India against Pakistan. There is no way we could have missed this clash,” say Sanjeev and Vineeta, IT professionals from Delhi who came on the train along with their son Shorya.

Vineeta says, “This is the first time that I would be watching a match in a stadium, though my husband and son have seen matches before. In fact I do not follow the game very closely. However, I am very excited about this match.”

The family hopes that despite the dignitaries scheduled to come for the match, the common people would not have to face much trouble.

The late night rain and thundershowers gave jitters to many with cricket enthusiasts praying fervently that the skies would clear up. The prayers seem to have been answered. As the passengers alighted from the train and looked towards the sky, the shining stars brought a smile to their faces.

Prashant, who is working in TCS flew all the way from Chennai to Delhi and then caught the special train to Chandigarh. “I got lucky and managed to get the tickets for the match. The rain gave quite a scare, but with the weather having cleared its time to root for India,” he said.

However, no need for fans to get disappointed. The sun was out in full force on Wednesday. The match is expected to begin on schedule. The weatherman though has said that there is a slight possibility of a light shower in the evening. However even if the match is called off due to rain -- there is a reserve day (Thursday) when the match can be played.

The Meteorological Department has forecasted a partly cloudy sky to prevail in this region with a little chance of light rain by Wednesday evening.

According to the MeT's area forecast, including that of entire Punjab, there could be dust storm or thunderstorm with light rain at a few places in the state today.

The MeT said that currently western disturbance is prevailing over Jammu and Kashmir and its neighbourhood while Rajasthan and its neighbourhood has been experiencing an Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation.

According to the Mohali pitch curator Daljit Singh, ball is likely to seam around under the flood lights.

What if it rains today?

Even though the Met department says it is unlikely, if today's match is rained out, then there is a reserve day - on Thursday when the match can be played. But, if Thursday is also washed out by rain, then the rule states, "If following a tie, weather conditions prevent the one over eliminator from being completed, or if the match is a no result, then the team that finished in the higher position in the Group stage shall proceed to the final."

So, if the weather gods are really unkind, it will be heartbreak for India, and Pakistan will make the finals.

In geo-politics and international diplomacy, Pakistan, a country carved out of four Indian provinces, has typically punched well above its weight. On the cricket field though, it has more than held its own against its forbear. A win/loss count against India of 12/9 in Tests and 69/46 in ODIs bespeaks a dominance that has only been whittled down in the past decade as the Pakistani nation itself has weakened and India has strengthened. But till the turn of the century, particularly in the 80s and 90s, when Islamabad muscled up militarily, it appeared Pakistan had the hex on India on the cricket field. Except when it came to the grand stage of one-day cricket – the World Cup.

In four World Cup clashes (1992, 1996, 1999, and 2003), India has dominated Pakistan, defeating its arch-rival each time. Having watched and reported three of these games, your correspondent can attest that each of these games were won comfortably by India, belying the build-up that suggested a close encounter. There were no last minute surprises or last over/last ball heroics. Each time, the game was won and lost well before the last ball was bowled. But that never precluded tension, grit, resolve and all that goes into an India-Pakistan game. 

For sheer tension and pressure, few games will match the 1999 World Cup encounter at Old Trafford in Manchester, England, a city that is home to a large Pakistani expat population. The game took place on June 8 bang in the middle of the Kargil War, just days after the Indian Army had routed Pakistani forces masquerading as mujahedin and recaptured Tiger Hill. The fact that Azharuddin was captaining the Indian side made the encounter even more eloquent. The ground, which had a capacity of only around 20,000 those days, was a sea of Pakistani flags with a couple of thousand Indian spectators with tricolors. The English barely registered. 

Azhar won the toss and India were cruising at 95/1 in the 21st over when Tendulkar (45) blasted a drive to Saqlain, stalling a big Indian total. Dravid made 61 and Azhar, out of form and under the gun, ground out 59 of the most precious runs in his career to take India to 227. It was the only time I ever saw Azhar bat inelegantly, but the runs were priceless. Pakistan was never really in the game after Javagal Srinath (3-37) and Prasad (5-27; man of the match) made early inroads. Point to note – it was early Shoaib Akhtar years; he was fast and furious; and he returned with analysis of 10-0-54-1 in a relatively low scoring game. 

The one memory that will remain etched in my mind are the wild scenes after the last Pakistan wicket fell. Kumble caught Wasim Akram in the deep and raced to the safety of the pavilion with barely any celebration because the crowd erupted and rushed onto the ground. Angry and disconsolate Pakistani supporters set fire to a few Indian flags as the Bobbies chased them out. Indian fans fled, mostly to the nearest pubs to roister. That evening, I wrote of an "Indian victory amid scenes so celebratory...you thought we had just won Independence." 

The tension may have been a little less but the ground crackled with electricity at Centurion outside Johannesburg in 2003. Pakistan had a potent new ball attack with Shoaib Akhtar at his peak and two the great Ws, Wasim and Waqar, with the combined experience of 800 wickets between them. Relations between India and Pakistan were not as bad as 1999 although the terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament and multiple strikes on Mumbai ensured continued mistrust. This time there were more Indians at the ground, including a big contingent from the so-called Bharat Army, the first time I saw a wandering cricket groupies who came from across the world. 

Pakistan won the toss, batted first, and posted 273 for 7 against a modest Indian attack that looked good on bouncy South African tracks (except against Australia). Saeed Anwar, ("bearded like a mullah," I observed in my report after the first inkling of overt religious overtones in the Pakistani team) made a wonderful 100 while the next highest Pakistani score was 32. Inzamam was run out for the nth time and I remember collapsing in laughter at the sight and writing "Inzy was run-outzy" in my notes. 

But 274 to win seemed a mountain to climb on a bouncy wicket against Shoaib and two Ws. Sachin Tendulkar then played what is arguably his greatest innings (in my book) – a majestic 97 that was the last word in counterattack. In fact, Sehwag and he settled the battle in the first half-hour, blasting a 50 partnership in less than five overs. The mayhem began when Sachin crashed a four of Wasim's third ball – a stroke he later said told him it was his day because of the way the ball hit the sweet spot. 

However, the most indelible memory of the game came soon after when the great man walloped a Shoaib bouncer over third man for a six. Such upper cuts, pretty commonplace nowadays, were quite rare those days, and as Shoaib's 150kmph deliver was sent over the boundary, there was a complete change of dynamic on the ground. Sehwag followed suit with a similar six off Waqar. 

Fours cascaded from the blades of the sword and the scimitar. I remember scrambling down to PTI's Ashish Shukla and giving him a high-five, saying "paisa vasool." Of course I hadn't paid a dime; I was credentialed for the World Cup (which I had to ditch before the end because Bush declared war on Iraq just ahead of the final and I had to rush back to Washington DC). It was worth going all the way to South Africa just for that one game. "They must have drunk down a relish of adrenalin and testosterone. What they served up was a heady exhibition of brute power, terrifying speed, and raw emotion. India and Pakistan conjured up yet another stomach-churning epic thriller that no Bollywood or Hollywood can script," I wrote of that game. 

Still, it wasn't an easy victory. Waqar took two in two, including Ganguly first ball, before Mohammed Kaif joined Sachin and steadied the innings. I mention Kaif here because not only was his role in blunting Pakistani pace that day understated, but also because he was yet another Muslim who performed splendidly in a pressure game (Zaheer was in the team too). One of the most heartening features of Indian cricket has been the utter lack of parochialism or religious overtones even as our neighbor has gone in the opposite direction. 

India won in a canter at the end even though there was still 97 to get when Sachin fell to Shoaib for 97. By then he had tamed the Pakistani attack and Shoaib's final analysis read 10-0-72-1. Still, many previous Indian teams has a tendency to panic and fold once Sachin got out. But Dravid and Yuvraj batted with supreme confidence to take India over the line. Looking into my archives, I see that I noted that Yuvraj, who made 50 not out, grew from "boy to man" in this innings. It was also a sad end to the careers of the two Ws. 

Bangalore 1996 will be remembered for two epic moments. Ajay Jadeja's savage hitting of Waqar Younis (he made 42 not out of 25 balls in arguably the only innings people remember him for) and Venkatesh Prasad clean bowling Aamir Sohail after a verbal spat and pointing him in the direction of the pavilion - a rare show of Indian aggro. It was also one of the first time the stadium was aflame with the tricolor, something which would become a common feature thereafter. 

I wasn't present at the SCG in 1992 when India and Pakistan played for the first time in a World Cup game (how they avoid each other in four previous World Cups is a mystery), but Sachin made a 50 batting in the middle order as India made a modest 216 and also bowled a full quota of ten overs. Kapil Dev and Manoj Prabhakar were unplayable and bowled 20 between them for 52 as Pakistan folded for 173. They would go on to win the World Cup that year, but India returned home with the satisfaction that they had beaten the eventual winners. 

So four wins out of four. And all of India wishing for 5-0. Over to Mohali.

During the 1996 World Cup, Avijit Ghosh was in Faislabad reporting on the Sri Lanka-England quarterfinal the day India beat Pakistan. He recalls how Pakistan reacted to the defeat...

Everybody remembers that game. The India-Pakistan 1996 World Cup match where Ajay Jadeja spanked Waqar Younis for a couple of overs and overnight became a poster boy. For generations hockey and cricket have served as proxy platforms of war. That game was meant to settle every issue of national pride and manhood. Much before the first ball was bowled, the air was charged with dynamite. And everyone was ready to be blown over.

In Pakistan, everybody seemed to be on speed: energised, excited and chatty. The joke was that doctors treating hypertension had long queues outside their clinics. There was no overtly anti-India frenzy on the street. But it was evident that losing wasn't really an option.

Taxi drivers, TV hosts, waiters and former cricketers -- everybody was convinced Pakistan would win the game. They had an unshakeable belief in the superiority of their team. We are better, so we will win: that's what most of them said. And, most informed neutrals admitted that the green and white guys looked meaner, readier, classier.

The Pakistanis had one major stress factor though: Sachin Tendulkar. In the previous games, his scores were: 127 not out, 70, 90, 137 and 3. Tendulkar, then 22 years old, looked imperious, almost infallible. Almost every Pakistani believed that the Mumbai batting genius was the only hurdle between them and a place in the last four.

A salesman at Lahore's Liberty Market, however, was confident that the Pakistani pace attack would get him early. "If you look at his record against us, it isn't much to talk about," he winked. The shop owner gave me a 10% discount when he came to know that I was a journalist. The next day we drove to Faislabad in a shared Toyota taxi. The Indian automobile revolution was still a few years away. It was a sharp contrast from the yellow and black Ambassador taxi that we normally travelled in.

On March 9, 1996, the day India took on Pakistan in Bangalore, I was reporting on another quarterfinal game: England versus Sri Lanka. Nobody, including the 1,500 spectators in Faislabad's Iqbal Stadium seemed remotely interested in the on-field proceedings. You could hear the running commentary on the transistor radio in the stands.

The press box was strangely nervous though some journos also kept cracking jokes. And there were conspiracy theories about Wasim Akram's injury that kept him out of the game. India made a slow but solid start. When Tendulkar was bowled, someone told an Indian journo, "Aapki to aadhi team out ho gayee." He quipped, "Aadhi nahi sahib, poori out ho gayee."

The England-Lanka game got over quickly. Unlike the one fought out in Bangalore, it was a day game. By the time we finished filing our reports and entered our hotel, the Pakistan reply had reached a critical stage. At the lobby, I recall seeing a few tense faces watching TV. When Salim Malik was out, one of us spontaneously exclaimed, "He is gone." Angry heads instantly turned around. But things kept going from bad to worse for Pakistan. Nobody spoke. By 9.30pm, it was all over.

I stepped out of the hotel and walked the streets hoping to soak in the general mood. The silence was deafening.

As the excitement in two countries reached fever pitch and the tension rose to near-paralysing levels, Team India turned for motivation to the man who has never seen defeat in a World Cup game against Pakistan for close to two decades now.

On the eve of the semifinal in Mohali, India’s mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton took the back seat, and the task of delivering the team talk fell on Sachin Tendulkar.

The veteran of six World Cups — during which India have got the better of Pakistan in four games — probably sensed it would be counterproductive to dwell for too long on the obvious significance of the match ahead.

Sources close to the team said Tendulkar’s talk was short but very effective. He essentially asked the boys to be calm and to stick to their natural game.

“He went back to the 2003 group game at Centurion. He spoke about how he had refused to fall into the short ball trap that the Pakistani quicks Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis and Shoaib Akhtar had laid for him, and instead played his natural game,” said a source. Tendulkar smashed 98 off 75 balls as India chased down Pakistan’s 273 with six wickets and over four overs to spare.

The gist of Tendulkar’s message was that the team must not allow Pakistan to dictate terms — either through mind games or through on-field strategy, the source said. Neither the opposition or the occasion, Tendulkar said, should be reason for any player or the team to change their tried-and-tested game.
